Integra, Campervan or maybe SUV?

Choosing the right camper is key to a safe and comfortable journey. In the desert, a powerful drive and good ventilation are key; on sandy trails, lightweight construction and off-road tires are key. Insulation and heating are key in icy conditions; and in the mountains, a powerful engine and maneuverability are key. A well-suited vehicle provides independence and peace of mind, allowing you to focus on discovering the world instead of technical issues. It's an investment in the comfort and safety of every adventure.

Types of vehicles in our expeditions

SUV, Off-road 4x4

SUV, Off-road 4x4

This is the most "raw" form of traveling on four wheels – something for those who value contact with nature, independence, and the ability to go where no other camper can. A 4x4 off-road vehicle with a rooftop tent is the essence of freedom – you can park practically anywhere: on a cliff, in the forest, on the beach, or in the mountains.

Advantages:

  • Unparalleled off-road capabilities – you can go places a classic camper wouldn't even think of.

  • Speed and mobility – easily moves between locations.

  • Perfect for off-grid trips – no camping infrastructure needed.

  • It gives a unique sense of adventure and closeness to nature.

Disadvantages (and it's worth being honest here):

  • There are no toilets or showers inside – if there are any, they are usually outdoor and cold. For women (and others!), this can be a significant inconvenience, especially on longer trips.

  • Rooftop tents can be problematic in bad weather. In strong winds, they can make a really loud noise – a sensation that some find downright terrifying.

  • No heating – cold nights, especially in the mountains or northern Europe, can be uncomfortable.

  • Limited space – no possibility of free movement within the “interior”.

I recommend this type of vehicle for those who prioritize comfort over adventure. Perfect for singles, couples, or groups of friends who enjoy a survivalist atmosphere.

Dimensions and weight

A typical off-road SUV with a rooftop tent is 4.5 to 5 meters long, approximately 1.9 to 2.0 meters wide, and approximately 2.05 meters high when folded. When unfolded, the entire unit reaches a height of approximately 3 meters. The gross vehicle weight (GVW) is typically 2,200–2,800 kg, and it sleeps two people. This is a very lightweight and mobile setup—ideal for driving over rough terrain and for camping in remote areas.

Mini campervan

Mini campervan

Minicampervans are van-class vehicles with a pop-up roof, which, when folded down, can be transformed into a cozy bedroom. They may look unassuming from the outside, but they offer a surprising amount of interior space.

Advantages:

  • Compact size – easy to park in the city.

  • The opening roof provides a second bed and better ventilation.

  • On board: small kitchen, fridge, mobile toilet and outdoor shower .

  • Often equipped with a parking heater.

Defects:

  • Little space to live

  • The shower and toilet do not provide complete privacy.

  • The tilting roof can be noisy in strong winds.

Who's it for: For couples or active travelers who want comfort without sacrificing mobility.

Dimensions and weight

Mini campervans range in length from 4.9 to 5.3 meters, are approximately 1.9–2.0 meters wide, and are 1.95–2.05 meters high with the roof closed, reaching up to 2.8 meters with it open. Interior height is approximately 1.35–1.45 meters, and gross vehicle weight (GVW) is 2,600–3,000 kg. Sleeps 2–3 people. These compact vehicles will fit in most underground car parks and offer a surprising amount of functionality in a small space.

Campervan

A front- or rear-wheel drive campervan is a fully-fledged camper. It has a kitchen, heating, and often a chemical toilet.

Advantages:

  • Comfortable sleep and protection from the weather.

  • Kitchen, fridge and heating as standard.

  • Moderate fuel consumption, easy to drive.

  • Bathroom: Toilet and shower are usually standard for this type of vehicle.

Defects:

  • Less space than in a semi-integrated.

Dimensions and weight

A 2x4 campervan is 5.4 to 6.4 meters long, approximately 2.05–2.10 meters wide, and 2.65–2.85 meters high. The interior height is 1.85–1.95 meters, and the gross vehicle weight (GVW) is typically 3,300–3,500 kg. The vehicle offers 2–3 sleeping spaces and is fully equipped with a bathroom with shower and toilet, a kitchen, and heating. This is the most versatile type of campervan – compact yet fully functional.

  • It will work well both in summer and winter.

  • A great compromise between comfort and handling.

Inside, you'll find 2–4 sleeping spaces. This vehicle offers a high level of comfort, complete sanitary and kitchen facilities, yet is still compact enough to drive with a category B driving license.

Alcove

Alcove

The alcove camper is the most recognizable shape – with a characteristic “hump” above the driver’s cabin, which houses an additional bed.

Advantages:

  • Huge sleeping space – for up to 6 people.

  • Perfect for families with children or groups of friends.

  • Fully equipped – kitchen, bathroom, heating, lots of storage space.

  • Very practical in everyday use.

Defects:

  • Higher fuel consumption and high air resistance.

  • Greater height – restrictions on bridges, tunnel entrances and parking lots.

  • Less aerodynamic, so louder when driving.

An alcove is a great choice when you want to travel with a few people and be sure that everyone has their own place to sleep.

Dimensions and weight

The alcove camper is 6.0 to 7.5 meters long, 2.30–2.35 meters wide, and 3.10–3.20 meters high. Interior height is approximately 2.00–2.05 meters, and the gross vehicle weight (GVW) ranges from 3,500–4,250 kg. It offers 4–6 sleeping spaces, and a distinctive superstructure above the driver's cab creates a spacious bedroom. This practical, family-friendly solution provides the most sleeping accommodations.

Integra

Integra

The Integra is the ultimate campervan – a true "hotel on wheels." The driver's cabin and living area form a single unit, ensuring maximum space and comfort.
